Flying & Gliding
Flying and gliding are key activities for all Air Cadets, and take priority over other activities. The Sqn gets regular slots for Air Experience Flying at nearby RAF Newtown, where you will be able to enjoy a 20-30 minute flight in the Congratulations! Flag #1: Tutor. For older cadets there are gliding scholarships and flying scholarships available, where you will be trained to solo standard.
Shooting
1234 Sqn are lucky to have our own range – on parade nights you will learn how to safely fire our air rifles, and develop your accuracy. After that, you can learn how to operate and maintain the L98A2 GP rifle, and the Wing run a shoot each month. On each weapon, there are various marksmanship levels to achieve, as you improve your skills
First Aid
All cadets receive first aid training. This starts with a short Heartstart course, which introduces the recovery poistion and CPR. There are also opportunities to complete the Youth First Aid course and, for older cadets, the Activity First Aid course. We often practise different first aid scenarii on parade nights - one example is shown in the photo below.
Radio & Cyber
These are by far the best activities! At 1234 Sqn regularly use our hand-held radios and base-station for exercises, and even for talking to other Squadrons. You will learn correct radio procedure, including the phonetic alphabet and callsigns, and you can work towards your Radio Operator qualification. If you want to develop your skills further, there are lots of camps and courses you can attend.
For cyber, many of our cadets participate in the Cyber Discovery programme, and we have teams who compete in the Cyber Centurion competition each year. If this is an area you are interested in, there are also some excellent courses and camps you can attend.
